Kent Police Male Voice Choir

How many of our members have never heard the Kent Police Male Voice Choir singing?  If you haven't your really have missed something special.

Formed in 1978  under the stewardship of Chief Constable Barry Paine the Choir has gone from strength to strength.  Jools Holland OBE DL is patron of the Choir and Former ACC Sir Edward Crew and his wife Lady Gillian QPM are ambassadors.  The Choir is a nationally recognised ensemble

Consisting of about 50  members the Choir can normally turn out between 30 and 40 members to each concert.  There are still 6-7 original members singing.  Looking a bit older and with greying hair but still young at heart

The Choir performs 12 concerts each year and would love to see NARPO members and their families.  As well as supporting the Choir you would be helping locally chosen charities.

Concert dates are listed on the Kent Police Male Voice Choir website (https://www.kpmvc.co.uk/home ) or ring Roy Waller on 01233 611205

Why not book places at a concert or at attend a Choir practice?  Who knows? You may even be tempted to join

Old Comrades Reunion
Thursday 27th July 2023

Although not strictly a NARPO "Do" I think its fair to relate the friendship of the Old Comrades Dinner held on Thursday the 27th of July at the Cornwall Suite Tovil Maidstone

Arranged by Chris Collins and his team the event was reasonably well attended.  As is to be expected the meal was excellent as always at this venue and the conversation was loud and happy.

The new Chief Constable Tim Smith was prominent in the pre-meal drinks talking to everybody informally and no doubt getting his ears chewed off by a few old lamp swingers like myself.  Both in the bar and in the after-dinner speech he came across as having the forces and the publics' best interest at heart.  His commitment to the front-line staff was a joy to old ears like mine .

I look forward to the Force progressing toward his stated goals.  Well done sir

Unfortunately, the attendees showed a leaning towards the older end of the retirees.  This will always be a concern as if NARPO is to provide support and comradeship to our members we do need to recruit younger members who will eventually pick up the baton.

This is a very pleasant event with good company and excellent food to boot.

Please consider coming next year.  Please also consider NARPO membership if you are not already a member.

Once again thanks to Chris and his team

Ashford Reunion
3rd August 2023

Once again the East Kent Reunion was held at the Sandyacres Sports Club Ashford.  The event is becoming more diverse a mix of ages which bodes well for the continued success of the event.

Please remember that although held at Ashford the event is for anybody who wants to get together and swing that old blue lamp whether or not you served at Ashford

The hall was booked from 1200 until 4pm but some of the reprobates were still jawing in the car park long after that

The buffet provided was its usual excellent quality and was paid for from Narpo funds.  My thanks to the Committee for authorising this

I would like to organise a similar event in the East of the County so suggestions as to venues would be most welcome.  Bear in mind it must be able to cope for those of us who are less mobile or in wheelchairs

I look forward to seeing you all again.  Perhaps at the Christmas Lunch of the 7th December 2023 At the Cathedral Lodge Canterbury 12:00 for 13:00

Thanks

Tony

Kent Police Museum  -  Help Needed

Are you passionate about history? Interested in getting experience in the heritage sector? We need your help telling the stories and history of policing in the county at the Kent Police Museum!

The Kent Police Museum has recently reopened at Faversham Police Station and we are looking for volunteers to help tell the story of policing, by welcoming, assisting and supervising the public and groups when they visit the museum.

You’ll need:

  • effective communication skills

  • a friendly and welcoming manner

  • to be prepared to engage with all age groups

There will also be opportunities to work behind the scenes on the collections, helping to catalogue and interpret our artefacts and assisting in developing new initiatives for making Kent Police history available to the wider community.

This role requires a minimum contribution of 3 hours per week, with Saturday support particularly needed. Experience in policing and an interest in heritage is especially welcome.

To apply you simply need to be aged 18 or over and able to get to Faversham Police Station, which is situated close to rail and bus links. Free parking on site is available. All candidates will need to be vetted prior to commencing any volunteering duties.

To find out more and see how to apply, please contact Paul Upton (Museum Curator) at museum@kent.police.uk or telephone 01795 433028.
